Skipper
Bay

Unique crafts and keepsakes bathed in watercolor is exactly what you can expect from curios creator Taryn Skipper, owner, crafts-master, and artist of Skipper Bay.

In search of a mark that projects the distinctiveness of her custom handmade treasures, Taryn reached out in trust, and with a fat wad of cash in hand (“wink”), to develop her own keepsake, incorporating her own sentiments about the services she provides and the precious commissions she crafts. Capture a keepsake, sounds simple enough.

& design

With a name like Skipper Bay the obvious directions seemed simple enough – something nautical, something marine, or perhaps a sea shanty could provide plenty of inspiration in pursuit of the precious. (...arrgh, stop that. Anyway,...)

Digging for inspiration, mythical creatures arise along with most of the standard “hipster”-ish, minimalist, hand-drawn clip art assets everyone has come to entertain. Within all the bloated and overused concepts, it was a challenge to leave those ideas behind and dive deeper for the more powerful and simplistic connection to the elusive white whale.

Narrowing focus to a few basic themes correlating with the concepts around keepsakes – rare, delicate, protective — brought light to creatures who aren't mythical, but rather the ones you never see unless in a unique situation. When it came to the selected mark, the theme is about a scarce creature of the sea, the seahorse, and with it captured there is a need to keep it protected, the coral, hence you never leave your most cherished, rare, and valuable possession vulnerable. Tie the package up with a smidgen of the typeface Cabana, and our white whale is packaged for delivery.

I suppose you know you are on the right path when you present your work to your client and they respond:
“I told [my husband] the other day that in my head there was a seahorse in my logo, so it's so cool that there are seahorse options.”

And with that another mark has found its home. As we raise anchor, our course charted – second star on the right and straight on ‘til morning – don’t forget you can find truly amazing custom watercolor keepsakes at SkipperBay.com
